How to Use the Spacebar Speed Test
Running the test is simple — no setup required:
- Step 1: Choose your test duration (1s, 5s, 10s, 30s, 60s) from the strip above the zone, or drag the custom slider for any duration up to 120s.
- Step 2: Press Spacebar anywhere on the page (or tap the zone on mobile). A 3-second countdown begins.
- Step 3: Press Space as fast as you can until the timer hits zero. Your live SPS and press count update in real time.
- Step 4: Your final SPS, total presses, and rank badge are shown instantly on the result screen.
- Step 5: Hit Try Again to reset, or Share to copy your result to clipboard.
💡 Best for comparison: Always use the 5-second test. It's the community standard for comparing SPS scores fairly between players.
📱 On mobile: Tap the dark zone repeatedly with alternating thumbs. The spacebar test doubles as a tap-speed test on touchscreens.

Duration affects score: 1-second tests show peak burst speed. 30–60s tests reveal sustained endurance speed. Use 5s for fair cross-comparison.
Score by Test Duration
The same physical speed produces different SPS numbers depending on test length. Shorter tests favour burst performance; longer tests expose fatigue dropoff. The table above assumes a 5-second test.
What Counts as a Press?
Each keydown event on the Spacebar registers as one press. Key-repeat events (held key) are filtered out — only distinct presses count. If your keyboard has a high key-repeat rate, held Space will not inflate your score.
How to Improve Your Spacebar Speed
🖐️ Relax your hand — Tension is the #1 limiter. Keep your wrist slightly elevated and your thumb completely loose between presses. Grip the desk, not the keyboard.
💪 Short burst training — Do 10 × 1-second all-out tests with 30 seconds rest between each. This trains fast-twitch thumb fibres more effectively than long continuous sessions.
✋ Alternate both thumbs — The fastest technique: alternate left and right thumbs on the spacebar in rapid alternation. This is the spacebar equivalent of butterfly clicking and can double single-thumb speed.
🌋 Always warm up — Flex both thumbs, rotate your wrists gently, and do 10 slow presses before testing. Cold tendons are measurably slower — a 30-second warm-up can add 0.5–1 SPS.
🕛 Track trends, not single runs — SPS varies naturally ±10% between runs. Take the average of 5 tests for a reliable baseline. Focus on weekly improvement rather than individual scores.
⚓ Upgrade your spacebar — Light-actuation mechanical switches (Cherry MX Red, Gateron Yellow, 35–45g) allow faster keypresses with less fatigue than heavy membrane keyboards (60–80g actuation).
🖥️ Position matters — Rest your thumb pad (not the tip) on the spacebar centre. A lower resting position lets you press with more of the thumb's natural downstroke, increasing leverage and speed.
Spacebar Speed Techniques
Single-Thumb Standard
Using one thumb with a rapid up-down motion. The baseline technique. Typical range: 4–8 SPS. Best for accuracy-focused games where consistent rhythm matters more than raw speed.
Dual-Thumb Alternating
Place both thumbs on the spacebar and alternate them in rapid succession — left, right, left, right. Each thumb only presses every other cycle, halving individual fatigue. Typical range: 10–16 SPS. The most effective technique for burst speed.
Thumb Roll
Roll your dominant thumb across the spacebar from tip to pad in a forward rocking motion, registering a press on the downstroke and allowing a natural rebound. Reduces the travel distance per press. Typical range: 7–11 SPS.
Wrist-Assisted Bounce
Using slight wrist oscillation to assist the thumb's up-down motion, similar to jitter clicking on a mouse. The wrist provides a larger muscle group to drive the motion. Can reach 12–15 SPS but risks strain on the wrist flexors with extended use.
⚠️ Avoid strain: Wrist-assisted and single-hand high-frequency techniques can cause repetitive strain injury (RSI). Use short test durations (1–5s) when practising fast techniques and stop if you feel pain or tingling.
Technique Comparison
| Technique | Typical SPS | Difficulty |
| Single thumb | 4–8 | Easy |
| Thumb roll | 7–11 | Medium |
| Wrist-assisted | 12–15 | Hard |
| Dual-thumb alternate | 10–16+ | Hard |
How Keyboard Type Affects SPS
The physical properties of your keyboard's spacebar directly impact how fast you can press it.
Switch Types
| Switch Type | Actuation Force | SPS Impact |
| Membrane / Chiclet | 60–80g | Baseline (slowest) |
| Cherry MX Brown | 45g | +0.5–1 SPS |
| Cherry MX Red | 45g linear | +1–1.5 SPS |
| Gateron Yellow | 35g linear | +1.5–2 SPS |
| Topre 30g | 30g | +2–3 SPS |
Spacebar Stabilisers
Rattly, unlubed spacebar stabilisers add inconsistency and tactile noise that can disrupt rhythm. Lubing your stabilisers (Krytox 205g0 or Dielectric Grease) creates a smoother, more consistent press feel that helps maintain rhythm at high speed.
Key-Repeat & N-Key Rollover
This test registers individual keydown events and ignores held-key repeat. Your keyboard's N-Key Rollover (NKRO) setting does not affect SPS measurement since only one key is used at a time.
Polling Rate
Keyboard polling rate (typically 1000Hz on gaming keyboards) means each press is detected within 1ms. Standard 125Hz keyboards detect within 8ms. The difference is negligible for SPS testing but may become noticeable at 15+ SPS.
💡 Best budget upgrade: If you're on a membrane keyboard, switching to any entry-level mechanical keyboard (e.g. Redragon K552) will give you a noticeable SPS improvement for under $40.
Spacebar Speed Records & Benchmarks
🏆 World-class benchmark: Sustained spacebar speeds above 16 SPS on a 5-second test place you in the top 1% of all users globally.
Community Benchmarks (5-second test)

Factors That Affect Peak Score
- Keyboard: Linear light switches (35–45g) allow 2–3 SPS more than heavy membranes.
- Technique: Dual-thumb alternating adds 4–6 SPS over single-thumb.
- Duration: 1s tests show burst speed; 10s+ reveals sustainable speed.
- Fatigue: Most users drop 1–2 SPS after 20 seconds of maximum effort.
- Time of day: Afternoon tests typically yield 5–8% higher scores than morning tests due to muscle temperature.
Improving Over Time
With consistent daily practice (5 minutes/day), most users improve by 1–3 SPS within two weeks. Gains slow after 10 SPS — further improvement requires deliberate technique work rather than volume practice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use an auto-presser or macro?
The test measures real keyboard events. Macros and auto-pressers produce suspiciously round SPS values (exactly 15.00, 20.00) that are instantly recognisable. They also don't represent physical skill.
Why are my scores inconsistent between runs?
SPS naturally varies ±10% between tests due to muscle temperature, fatigue, concentration and keyboard contact angle. Take 5 runs and use the average as your true score.
Does my keyboard model affect my score?
Yes, significantly. Light linear switches (35–45g actuation) allow 1.5–3 SPS more than heavy membrane keyboards. See the Keyboard tab for a full breakdown.
Is this test accurate?
Yes. We use performance.now() for sub-millisecond event timing. All processing is local in your browser — zero server round-trips affect your measurement.
Does the test count held-key repeats?
No. We track distinct keydown events and ignore OS key-repeat. Holding the spacebar will only register one press.
How does mobile work?
On mobile, tapping the dark test zone registers as a press. You can measure tap speed, but scores are not directly comparable to desktop spacebar scores due to different physical mechanics.
Are scores saved?
Session stats are stored in memory during your visit. Enable Save History in Settings ⚙️ → Data to persist scores to localStorage between sessions.
What is the personal best system?
Your best SPS score is tracked separately for each test duration (1s, 5s, 10s, etc.) and shown in the sidebar banner. PBs persist in localStorage until you clear them.
